Honoring Romeo Tata
The Story Behind
the Name
Romeo Tata was born in 1905 in New York, shortly after his parents arrived in the United States from Italy. From an early age, music shaped his path, leading him to become both a violinist and composer of distinction.
He studied at Yale University, earning both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music. During his career, he was twice awarded scholarships to study composition with the renowned Nadia Boulanger in Fontainebleau, France—an opportunity reserved for musicians of exceptional promise.
Performer, Educator, Leader
Romeo performed widely across the United States and internationally, appearing both as a soloist and as a member of his quartet, the Beaumont Quartet. In addition to his performing career, he conducted orchestras nationwide.
He became a central figure at Michigan State University, where he served for 35 years as professor of violin and music theory. During his tenure, he also held leadership roles as Chairperson of the Department of Violin and conductor of the MSU Orchestra.
His influence extended far beyond the stage, shaping generations of musicians through instruction and mentorship.
Today, the Tata legacy continues in Seattle, Washington. Violin performance and education remain central to the family’s passion and identity. Both locally and internationally, members of the Tata family are recognized in their respective musical circles, carrying forward the tradition of excellence that Romeo began.
Tata Violins reflects that heritage: thoughtful, serious, and rooted in respect for the instrument and those who study it.
